This is a publication from 2004 research. Contained in the publication is an alphabetical listing of the black and mulatto population from the 1850 Pennsylvania Census in the 29 counties which were part of or formed from various parts of Northumberland County Pennsylvania. The listing is divided by county and indexed by more than 1,000 surnames in the back. It is a great resource for anyone researching African American genealogy in this region of Central Pennsylvania.
The Counties covered are: Armstrong, Bradford, Cameron, Centre, Clarion, Clearfield, Clinton, Columbia, Elk, Forrest, Indiana, Jefferson, Juniata, Lackawana, Luzerne, Lycoming, Mc Kean, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, Venango, Warren, Wyoming,
There is also a listing of the free black and mulattos found in the complete Pennsylvania Census in 1790 and 1800. This is for the entire state. This list combines both sets of census records and is listed alphabetically. This is also included in the index of surnames in the back. The book can be ordered through Closson Press. Plans are to expand the listing of free blacks to include 1810-1840. This listing will not be completed until 2007.
